The conservancy is home to pastoralist and semi- agricultural indigenous communities that majorly include Borana, Konso, Sakuye and Burji. According to KNBS census 2019, the human population of Sagante/Jaldesa Ward is approximately 28,700 people. Jaldesa Community Conservancy covers Sagante/jaldesa ward with a land mass of approximately 104,000 hectares of land. The conservancy is general in arid and semi-arid land with 2 rainy seasons, March- May short rains and October-December long rains.
The objective of the conservancy is to incorporate local community in wildlife conservation and protection while preserving the community’s unique lifestyle, enhance livelihood, restore rangelands, empower youths and women through skill development and to ensure peaceful coexistence among the resident communities.
The elephant is one of the most iconic wildlife species found within the Marsabit landscape and plays a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Marsabit’s unique forests, grasslands, and rangelands provide important habitat and migration corridors for elephants, supporting both resident and seasonal populations. The region is particularly renowned for its large-tusked elephants, including the legendary Ahmed of Marsabit, whose protection became a symbol of wildlife conservation in Kenya.
Jaldesa Community Conservancy is committed to promoting peaceful coexistence between people and elephants through conservation awareness, habitat protection, and sustainable natural resource management. By working closely with local communities, government agencies, and conservation partners, the conservancy contributes to the long-term survival of elephants while supporting livelihoods that depend on healthy ecosystems.
The conservancy vision is an empowered community that its members can sustainably access human needs without discrimination. The mission is to provide a platform for sustainable protection and use of resources within jaldesa community land for income generation through ecofriendly tourism activities that shall address health, water, education, livestock, infrastructure and wealth creation for future generations.
